Extortionate Australian web hosts

Posted by stuart as Uncategorized

I had occasion to install some software on a web server for a client today.

The software required a MySQL database, and the client had already purchased hosting for the site.

I tried logging into my clients sites control panel:

domainname.com.au/cpanel?

Nope.

domainname.com.au/plesk?

Nope

“Hmmm”, I thought, “must be a custom control panel, I’ll just pop over to the hosting company’s website and have a look.”

What I found stunned me.

My client is paying AU$20 a month (around US$17)  for the following package:

  • 50Mb of website space (that’s megabytes, not gigabytes!)
  • 1Gb a month ofdata transfer

Want a MySQL database? No problem, but it will cost you:

  • AU$15 setup fee, and AU$8 a month, just to host that single database, on top of the AU$20 you’re paying a month to host it.

Have a look for yourself.

Who said Australia is behind the rest of the world technologically speaking?

I can see your point, but at the end of the day people just want value for money. In general more expensive hosts will have better technical support and that can make a massive difference.

I’ve been on cheap hosts and expensive hosts and right now I’m probably at the upper end of the scale because the service I’m getting is fantastic.

Australian hosts are more expensive purely because they are Australian (if their servers are actually here). That said, the deal you mentioned is pretty damn bad still.

Hi Ross,

I can understand your point about people wanting value for money, this example is simply not good value.

It’s hosting run by an ISP, and without exception, Australian ISP’s rip off their customers when it comes to hosting.

I use resellerzoom, pay about US$13 a month or so, and have rarely had a problem with them.

Thanks for dropping by. :-)
