Why bother with forum account validation?
Posted by stuart as Uncategorized
I joined up a forum today. I’m generally not a forum posting kind of bloke, I just don’t have the time.
This forum is a rather large one in a niche which interests me, and I have a blog in said niche.
I dutifully signed up, giving a username, password, and email address. I was thus informed that the moderaters would consider my application, and I would receive an email informing me if I had been successful in my application.
“Strange”, I thought, “oh well, we’ll wait and see”.
I know that email verification for new forum accounts is pretty standard these days, as a way of deterring spammers, but this struck me as wierd all the same.
I received an email a few minutes later:
Your account must first be approved before you may use your account. You will receive another email shortly informing you of the admin’s decision.
Um, approved or denied on what grounds? All I’ve provided them with is an email address. How on earth are they going to decide whether I’m worthy based on my email address?
Why would you bother?

which was the forum where you did recieve such a two time request man.Kind of funny though .What hell any way would they need to get so possessive about their visitors asking them twice for confirmations.
They ask for approval as they may have an IP or an email address that they are trying to keep out. It usually happens when they have problems with spammers or trolls. They aren’t really qualifying you. They are making sure your IP and/or email address isn’t flagged.
That’s hilarious. I have had this happen to me too. They don’t ask any questions that would give them grounds to deny you, lol
it’s like they haven’t changed their signup process since 1989. Nowadays you get instant approval and the email verification gets done afterwards.
