There’s a whole other hemisphere, you know?
Got this email from text link ads today, I assume you all got the same one:
Hello Stuart, I hope you are having a great summer. The inventory of niche websites have been growing fast I wanted to extend to you a special discount. Save 15% on all NEW orders for the rest of July! Just enter:
Just when I’d got over bitching about the fact that not everybody in the world lives in the US, and thus doesn’t have an SSID (whathever the hell that is, but I find it difficult to sign up to some things without one!), I get an email from someone assuming that I’m enjoying the northern hemisphere summer.
So, for our hemispherically challenged friends at Text Link Ads, I present to you, the world:

So, as we are now aware, there is a whole other hemisphere down here! I know we probably do ourselves a disservice as far as our recognizability goes by not invading other countries to steal their oil secure our future energy supplies and the like, but here are a couple of things you might like to know about us:
- We’re not taking our summer vacation right now, it’s business as usual for us at the moment, we’re still going to work, our kids are still going to school, so therefore:
- We’re still buying shit online! We’re still clicking affiliate links, we’re still seeing your adsense ads, and we’re still hammering ebay like a bitch looking for cheap xbox games and kids toys. (Yep, we even got our own ebay down here!). So stop pissing and moaning that “summer” is a quiet time, and start selling your shit to us - ever heard of geotargeting people?
- We might not have as many people down here, but we still do stuff online. If you are geotargeting your ads at the US and Europe, here are a list of coutries in whole or part you’re NOT selling your shit to (about 600million people live down here, which is around 10% of the planet’s population - you can think of us as the mac users of the world’s population):
- Angola
- Botswana
- Burundi
- Comores
- Lesotho
- Malawi
- Mozambique
- Namibia
- Rwanda
- South Africa
- Swaziland
- Tanzania
- Zambia
- Zimbabwe
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Gabon
- Republic of the Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Kenya
- Somalia
- São Tomé and PrÃncipe
- Uganda
- East Timor
- Indonesia
- Maldives
- Madagascar
- Mauritius
- Seychelles
- Maldives
- Australia
- Cook Islands
- Easter Island
- Fiji
- Nauru
- New Zealand
- Niue
- Papua New Guinea
- Pitcairn
- Samoa
- Solomon Islands
- Tahiti
- Tokelau
- Tonga
- Tuvalu
- Vanuatu
- Kiribati
- Bolivia
- Chile
- Paraguay
- Peru
- Uruguay
- Brazil
- Ecuador
- Colombia
- American Samoa (USA)
- Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands
- Bouvet Island (Norway)
- Chagos Archipelago (United Kingdom)
- Easter Island (Chile)
- Falkland Islands (United Kingdom)
- French Polynesia (France)
- Galápagos Islands (Ecuador)
- Jarvis Island (USA)
- Juan Fernández Islands (Chile)
- Kerguelen Islands (France)
- Kermadec Islands (New Zealand)
- Mayotte (France)
- New Caledonia (France)
- New Zealand sub-antarctic islands (New Zealand)
- Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands (United Kingdom)
- Réunion (France)
- Saint Helena (United Kingdom)
- Saint Paul island and Amsterdam island (France)
- South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (United Kingdom, claimed by Argentina)
- South Orkney Islands (Antarctic Treaty signatories)
- Swains Island (USA, claimed by Tokelau)
- Tristan da Cunha (United Kingdom)
- Territory of New Caledonia and Dependencies (France)
- Territory of Wallis and Futuna Islands (France)
See the problem here? Now granted, I’ve never heard of some of these countries (although I’m sure the’re full of nice people!), and therefore I’m not sure I’d want to do business there, but we’re down here, doin’ our shit, not on “summer vacation” or anything. So if you’ve got something to sell, give us a try!
Oh, and back to my original point, it’s winter down here….

Haha, I saw that! This article made me chuckle. I live in the UK, and we’ve been having flash floods and rain. Lots of it (though I understand you need that). Hardly summer barbecue weather and bikinis!
I was about to say the same as Rhys, our summer has consisted of rain, rain, a hail storm last week, more rain, storms, and finally a little sun!
But it was Wimbledon fortnight so I’m not surprised!
As for SSID, isn’t that what a wireless router broadcasts (that you can switch off) and identifies your router?
Funny post by the way ![]()
Oops - You’re right Sarah, I think I meant SSN?
Nothing more annoying than sitting up till 10.30pm Adelaide time to watch Wimbledon (I’m a tennis nut), to find that play is delayed by rain.
Stupid place to hold an outdoor lawn tennis tournament. ![]()
Thanks Rhys - it’s been pissing down with rain here for the last month or so, but we’re still on damned water restrictions.
I think the SSN is basically a social security number which is linked to tax. I’m a member of a few affiliate schemes where I have to give a SSN if I earn more than $600 in the tax year.
Of course, it’s hard work getting americans to understand that 99% of the worlds population is not american, hence most of us don’t have a SSN.
Ho hum ![]()
Stu, it wasn’t much more fun trying to watch Wimbledon here. Worst weather for years if you ask me, and only being about an hour aware we suffered from similar weather!
Still, 2 years time and centre court will have a whole roof so it’ll be fine then ![]()
I’ll be interested to see how that whole roof over a grass-cout thing goes Sarah.
We have a football stadium here with a roof (think the MCG or Lords with a retractable roof on it), and they have all sorts of trouble keeping the turf up to scratch. And that’s only a foorball/cricket stadium. Now start to think about the quality of grass required for a tennis court, and I can see nothing but trouble for the All England tennis an croquet (WTF???) Club.
That picture of the world is brilliant, I spat some tea on my keyboard ![]()
Nice work!
Loved the picture to! Totaly hilarious!

When is it ever summer in the UK?
