Ranking number 1 in google for a keyword in two days.
I conducted a little experiment a couple of days ago.
I wanted to know if it was possible to rank in google for a keyword with one single backlink.
The keyword I chose had to be relatively obscure, but with enough competition to make it interesting, so I chose the term “doowadiddy“, which had around 360 results in google.
So what did I do?
I created two basically identical pages: doowadiddy1 and doowadiddy2, the layout and on-page SEO applied to the pages were identical, and I linked to both of them from the sidebar of this blog using the keyword as the anchor text.
There was one significant difference between the two pages. Doowadiddy2 was completely randomly and dynamically generated. Everything within the page was dynamic, including page title, meta description and keywords, H1, H2, and H3 headings and the content itself. The only constant on the page was that all the titles, meta tags, headings etc had the keyword in them. Every time this page was loaded, the viewer or search engine would see different copy, but with the same theme.
The keyword density for my chosen word of the static page was around 6%, and the keyword density of the dynamic page hovered somewhere between 5% and 7%.
The result?
Number one and two in Google in a little over 48 hours!
So which page won? The dynamic one. It will be interesting to see whether the pages continue to rank over time.

Hah. Just a couple of hours ago I posted about Google and SEO into one of the private forums I am on.
I made a blog post the other day.
It’s on the First Page of Google at #8 of 1,420,000 results. I don’t do any SEO or linking strategies. The only sites above mine are a couple of .gov and .mil sites and 2 other .com sites.
So, is SEO (for Google at least) totally pointless?
If you made a real post about “doowadiddy” on this blog, it _should_, by rights, go in at number 1 almost immediately. Well, you just did that, so let’s see if that happens? Might have been worth putting doowadiddy in the title of this blog post, but I guess it’ll be interesting anyway.
Off topic: What’s up with your comments? Can’t get them (or the leave a reply form) to display in Opera or IE - I thought you’d removed them until I just viewed the site in Firefox
Gary - you’ve just given me what I needed to work out how to do it from the blogsearch search page:
put “-site:blogspot.com” in the “at this URL” bit, and it works a treat.
I’d tried every combination of minuses etc in this field with no success.
You are, as we say here in Aus, “an absolute furking legend!”
Oli, you’re right - I’ve just checked it in Safari (1.0.3) on my Mac (10.2.8) and it is completely borked.
I also tried it in IE6 on my XP PC and the comments aren’t showing up at all.
Something is seriously broken, thanks for pointing it out to me, I’ll look into it, and try to fix it ASAP.
By the way, whilst I’ve got the two of you here, you should seriously put the name at the top of your posts so they show up in the feed. It’s hard trying to work out who’s saying what when reading in the feedreader.
Does your feed reader not show an “author” column in the list of posts? Mine => http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/9087/feedsut1.jpg
Will look in to adding something to the RSS feed to show it in the post itself…
Nice post, and I like your experiment. This certainly reinforces the common thought on anchor text and provides nice support for dynamic content.
