Can a blogger survive in isolation?
Just wondering if a blogger can survive if they live in isolation?
As bloggers, we interact with the outside world in two main ways:
- Leaving comments on other blogs
- Responding to comments on our own blogs.
Over the last couple of months, along with a significant drop in the number of posts I’m actually making here, I’ve had very little time to leave comments on other blogs.
This has had no appreciable impact on the stats of this blog, which is interesting, because my understanding was that this was where a significant amount of traffic was coming from.
So what do we gain from leaving comments on other blogs? Apart from the pagerank (assuming the blogger’s not using the “nofollow” tag), it would seem very little, other than the warm fuzy feeling you get from being part of a community.

I’ll follow commentor’s links in someone’s blog if I think they sound interesting. As you say, if the blogger’s switched off the nofollow (which mine all are ;)) then there’s maybe a little PR there too, but I don’t use that as a reason to comment on anyone’s site. If I think I can help or add to a post then I usually will.
At first integration into the blogging society is of the utmost. By being isolated there’s just no way to get the message out about your blog and whilst you may have good content, there’s noone to read it and no1 to talk to about it.
In the long run however and once you’ve acquired some loyal readers I think it is possible to encourage readers from search engines and by not commenting. It may not be the best form of co-operation with your blogging buddies but its not necessary to keep the continued growth.
I think you’re both right! I’m going to set aside an hour to go visit the actual blogs I read, rather than just read the feeds, and leave some comments later today.!
That’s exactly what I’ve done today - hence the comment! But I will be trying to do it more and more because I do love the buzz and feeling of community around these blogs! Keep up the good blogging mate.
I have often thought about this and I’m still not sure about it.
