When did I become a yank?

Posted by stuart as , ,

We have a term here in Australia, it’s a term of (sort of) endearment for our American friends.

The term is “Seppo” Derived thus: Yankee -> Yank -> Septic Tank -> Seppo

Simple really, isn’t it? (Australian rhyming slang is a language unto itself.)
“So what’s the point you’re trying to make, Stu?” I hear you ask.

Well, I want to know at what point exactly I became a seppo? I find myself more and more using American spelling when I write, contrary to my education of classic Queen’s English.

It all started with all those damned “center” tags in the the HTML, and went from there.

Is there nothing on this planet that this country is not taking over?

We’re having a really hard time with a couple Middle Eastern countries…

Ohhhh, low blow.

You’ve got to fight the urge! I’ve been writing with US spelt code since ‘93 when I first learnt to program with DBase III . The word ‘color’ started to creep into my everyday typing, but I’ve fought the urge to change. Of course center, color etc along with just natural speed typing tries to slip in but get your fingers typing those words correctly! Heck I even ensure I spell words properly and use punctuation in SMS messages!

Don’t turn to the dark side ;)

Chance - PMSL! That one is Gold! Any chance you lot are going to go into North Korea, or is it not worth the effort as they have no oil?

Sarah, I find myself trying to fight it, but giving in. I think you have given me the courage to fight on. I might do a post about how the rest of the world spells.

Your last point is a funny one - my wife takes the piss out of me because I proofread my text messages before I send them (I was a proofreader at a publishing house many moons ago, I think that might be why I am so anal about spelling, puctuation and grammar.)
