My first real crack at affiliate marketing
I wrote the other day about Oli’s excellent idea to market an affiliate website through offline channels using a URL redirect, so I sat Mrs. Pimpmypagerank down yesterday and we had a little chat about some ideas.
And this is what we came up with:
I have a domain (ausshopping.net) sitting around doing not much, which is nicely aged (about two years old). This domain has had about five pages sitting on it, with a couple of RSS feeds. It makes me maybe $3 a month in AdSense, so I’m quite happy to use it for something else. The domain only has a PR of 1, and no alexa ranking, but that doesn’t really matter, as we’re not going to be relying on Search Engine traffic here.
This domain name is perfect for this sort of idea, as it incorporates a reference to the fact that I am in Australia, the fact that the site’s subject is shopping, and it’s quite catchy and memorable.
(This domain will also be usable if I ever want to do the direct affiliate product through a redirect thing, as I can just use something like www.dvd.ausshopping.net)
So what are we going to do?
Simple - a shopping directory. Utilising clixgalore.com.au, who list over 4,000 affiliate programs based in Australia, I’m in the process of setting up an online shopping directory, with categories for everything from flowers to magazine subscriptions.
“So what?”, you might say - “you’ll be just one of a million affiliate websites out there, what makes this any different to them?”
I’m glad you asked…..
The difference here is in the promotion. With the lead-up to Christmas just starting, I intend to promote the site using some of the methods mentioned in previous posts
- T-shirt printing
- Maybe get a custom baseball cap made and wear it everywhere
- Car sticker
- Letterbox drop
- Flyers in car windscreens
- etc. etc.
So why am I doing this when I’ve said I’m pulling back on my AIS work? Because I don’t think that this is AIS. The results will be commensurate with the amount of effort I am prepared to put in to market the site.
It will be interesting to see how this goes
